Much is being said about Business Process Management (BPM) supporting Green IT initiatives globally. Much has yet to be done in this area, but already those who believe that BPM can help optimize organization’s use and consumption of resources see BPM as a powerful aid in green efforts.
We agree. The simple automation of the movement and publishing of documents underscores the potential. According to expert James DeRosa, reducing worldwide paper usage by a mere 10% would save over 100,000,000 trees, reduce the generation of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by 100,000,000 tons, and save $3.5 billion US in paper costs.

Optimization and efficiency is about more than reducing the consumption and use of paper. It also addresses the BPM software itself. Is the software efficient? What does it cost the organization to use and maintain it? In the world of Green, we reduce our use of resources by recycling, optimizing to become more efficient, seeking to be less consumptive, selecting renewable sources of energy, and consolidating tasks and effort.

Green software should reduce its impact on the organization – the initial cost of the software, consulting, integration, maintenance, and on going support. To reduce your corporation’s software impact many companies are seeking to use already purchased software in other ways. Or, they attempt to become more efficient by eliminating old or obsolete software and the associated maintenance costs. Some will focus on optimizing current business processes that involve software. Everyone will be trying to consolidate software related tasks and efforts.

Unfortunately the majority of BPM software solutions are typically “suites” of products and modules. The impact they have on an organization is typically profound and far reaching. Although the software itself may contribute to green initiatives by optimizing processes and eliminating paper usage, they also increase the organizations software footprint, often consuming more resources than they save.
